Did you know that celebrity mom, Kris Jenner, mother of Kim, Khloe, and Kourtney Kardashian attended Clairemont? She did. In fact, she is a proud Chieftain alumnus and consented to an interview with the chsarrow.com.
When Kris Houghton (now known as Kris Jenner) graduated from Clairemont High School in 1973, her dreams for her future revolved around being a mom. And quite a mom she has become! She is now one of America’s most famous moms and has her own show called ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians.’ In her days as a Chieftain, however, she never thought she would become famous. “I don’t think I ever thought about being a celebrity back in those days,” said Jenner, “but being at Clairemont definitely helped me with my social skills.”
Although she is a star now, she says her first job was anything but glamorous. She, like everyone, had to start at the bottom! “My very first job was working for my grandmother in her candle store,” said Jenner. Her second job wasn’t much better, nor was it at all glamorous, but when you’re a teenager trying to make money the job doesn’t really matter.
“When I was about fifteen I worked in a donut shop while I was attending Clairemont High School. I would go to the donut shop in University City very early in the morning and scrape glaze off the floor with a glaze scraper,” she adds. She’s come a long way!
While juggling school and work Jenner also managed to make time for extracurricular activities. “I ran track. I loved running track and doing field events. It’s funny that I ended up marrying an Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner.” He won the decathlon in Montreal in 1976.
Like many very social students, grades weren’t always her top priority. In fact, Kris attended many parties in her high school days. “I was an average student because I was so social and loved all of my friends so much. I put my heart and soul into what I was going to wear to class the next day instead of studying,” she says. Most students can probably relate to this.
“My favorite teacher was Mr. Sweet. He failed me in Algebra, and I had to take the class over again, but the second time I aced it.” She’s most certainly good with numbers (and money) now!
When Jenner attended Clairemont there was no closed campus. “We always used to leave school with someone who could drive and go down the hill to Jack-in-The-Box.” Clearly she was not a perfect student, but that didn’t interfere from her attaining success.
“I was definitely mischievous and always wanted to hang out with the students in the grade above me. My best friend Debbie was a grade ahead of me. I always wanted to skip class to be with her, and sometimes I did,” she says. For those of you who want to skip class, just be aware that you may not end up as fortunate as Mrs. Jenner.
As some final words of wisdom, Jenner expressed her love for Clairemont by saying, “I feel like you’re going to the best school that you could possibly attend. I had the most amazing high school experience, met lifelong friends, and gained a remarkable education from some of the world’s most fabulous teachers.” So Chiefs…there may be hope for you too!
